Can a static spark set off black powder?

Sparked ferrous material has a sustained spark, that why the flint striking the frizzen works so well.
I was amazed that static electricity wouldn't set off 4x (and more fine) black powder though. |

There are accounts of lightning hitting an ammo depot and setting it off, I guess a fire was originally started by the lightning strike which in turn caused the powder to light up. I personally saw one as a kid at a distance of about 3 miles from a hill and it was quite impressive.

try warming up some flour to get rid of any humidity and blow it on top of a candle and you'll see. |

Gas, K-1 or any gunpowder, I always wear rubber shoes and keep myself grounded.

Still does. The Goex black powder plant is about 20 miles away from me and they've had a number of explosions over the years. I think the last one was about six years ago. Almost all of the manufacturing process is done by remote control because the stuff is so easy to set off.

If you think about it, if static was a problem with reloading, there would be far fewer folks reloading. But, it isn't and there are more and more folks enjoying the hobby all the time. Brian |

When I build thermonuclear weapons I always ground myself and use a neutron shield so my fuel doesn't reach critical mass accidentally.
