French couple dies hiking New Mexico trail, but family camera leads sheriff to dehydrated boy: 'He could have been the victim as well'
My daughter hikes that area, frequently.
The desert is an unforgiving place. The dry heat makes folks think they don't need to take along water, as their sweat evaporates so quickly, they don't realize just how dehydrated they are. Plus, if they started out early in the morning, the temperatures were probably pretty nice. Quote:

You never travel in a desert area without plenty of water. Even if you are just driving through with no plans to stop. Shit happens. No water makes shit happen faster in a deadly way.

Water is just too heavy to carry, I'll wait until we find a drinking fountain out here.
Too civilized to understand the desert. |

I've been to White Sands in the summer. The sand doesn't feel all that hot as it reflects the heat which makes it deceiving.

Damn that is sad, real sad for the kid. Saint Johns river here is kind of fool proof for navigation. But people buy a boat with no idea what their doing and head out.
Lot of side creeks and waterways on the swampy side. They explore get stuck, lost and the search is on.

Big difference in elevation between most of France and the White Sands monument area.
