I used to boil them when I was refinishing them like Henry Ford building model A's. Boiled....sanded with a DA, then with 40 grit paper to restore the funky surface from the arsenal then several coats of iodine dye...after drying for a couple days in the sun a mixture of 50/50 boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits.
Too good of a finish on military rifles looks fake. I have also used pine tar. It's all in what you want.

I mix my tung oil with decreasing amounts of acetone. First coat, 70/30, next coat 60/40 etc, til I get to 100 percent with 0000 steel wool between coats. Soaks in much better that way
