Tarantula Hawk
I guess this will fit here in outdoor section
I see this often out hiking. They never bother me http://www.arkinspace.com/2011/09/ta...raptor-of.html The Tarantula Hawk - Ruthless ‘Raptor’ of the Insect World

I see them a lot down here in the desert. They don't seem to bother people much. They are single minded in getting bred then getting a tarantula. I know nobody that has been stung by a tarantula hawk. I don't think they act like the nasty wasps that abound here.

Had a big one land on my forearm, I admired his presence for quite a while. Then the bastard dipped his head down a took a triangular bite out of me arm. Before I could swat-n-kill he/she/it was gone! Still remember that experience, from several years ago. |

I used to spend a lot of time out in the desert when I was a kid, watching the critters. I never saw a tarantula hawk actually get a tarantula, but I did figure that the ones going in and out of a hole may have one down there.

I live in Yuma Az and I see them all the time. They always seem like they're going somewhere specific. They have never paid any attention to me regardless of how close they fly to me. Never heard of any tarantula hawk stingings in 24 years out on the desert. I am glad I'm not a tarantula though.
