Very interesting good post.
Read up if yah like on Rommel's Africa corps and the correlation of their field rations and ability to fight. Surprisingly a key ingredient in Rommel's failures in Africa was not the ability of his troops to fight but their problems with rations. Their foods were greasy, out of date and it was making his men sick. The allies were not serving steak and lobster but enough nourishing foods to keep the men on top of things. How does that saying go? "An Army travels on its stomach."

I pulled KP several times in the army back in the early 60's, in several different mess halls. The cooks were business like and did an excellent job with what they had. Either on post or field cooking. You worked like a dog but they generally worked harder. My regular unit had some really good cooks, though KP wasn't a fun job they never mistreated us, and put out decent meals. I have a lot of respect for army cooks though some think it is a third rate job. In the field they are actually the only people that can get smile out of anybody. KP usually went from 0430 til about 1930 hrs.

The army cooks when I was in (62-65) were pretty darn good. I was at a Nike site in the mountains outside of Los Angeles (LA04). One of my favorites was S.O.S. Sometimes made with chipped beef and sometimes ground hamburger.
Fort Bliss had the best bread/rolls. Yum. |

Ah hell don't matter Bluntforce we can't thank the cookies enough.
The younger troops can kick in but hell they were phasing out K.P. for quite a few years now I do believe? Think most all of the cooking and cleaning has been privatized? Navy ships and their Subs they have to have full staff to feed the crews but I think the rest have private subs doing the cooking? Not diminishing the fine job the kitchen crews do but its expensive and time consuming training troops for their M.O.S. So I think they kind of shunned peeling onions less yah really really screw up. |
