july project
we sell worms and crickets so i thought it would be a good idea to offer minnows as well. 100 gallon stock tank, some treated lumber and a re-purposed window ac unit converted to r134a.
under gravel bio filter powered by two pumps, two air stones and a mechanical filter on another pump. insulated cabinet, relocated thermostat, maintaining a twenty plus degree differential and still have more room on the thermostat. minnows arrive tomorrow to condition the tank. |

Cool! Business must be great!
We are only allowed minows caught from the water in which we are fishing. Something about 'introducing' unwanted specie. |

that's the rule at the big lake but i'm told nobody pays attention to it. as far as i'm concerned i don't know where the fish will be working, i just sell them. closest source is about thirty minutes away so i'm hoping it works out. i've been adding more tackle, rod an reel combos and other fishing gear as well.

Looking good and good luck with sales.
What exactly is the purpose of cooling the tank? Brian

I used an old water drinking fountain to back in 85 to chill and circulate water in one of those oval galvanized tanks for a friend. He ran a seasonal bait shop out of a 8x12 yard barn in a Bar's parking lot.

75 degrees is about max for a freshwater fish. lower temps decrease metabolism which decreases waste. i filled it with lake water so i don't have to condition the water. i'll replenish with rain water to avoid the chlorine in the city water which kills the beneficial ammonia eating bacteria in the bio filter.

Looks good, Flopshot!
I worked in a bait shop for a couple summers in Northern California. Actually, it was a marina and we also sold bait. I was 17, and never paid attention to how the minnows were kept cool, or cared why, though. I could see myself doing it again, one day.

If you let the city water sit in an open wide container the chlorine will evaporate in about 24 hours, that's what I used to do when I bred tropical fish.

How did you haul that much water? Or did you pump it from a nearby lake?

had our yard man pump it from the boss's bulkhead on the lake. two 55 gallon plastic drums and had a little left over for the replenishment drum. the bait guy gave me two dozen minnows yesterday to start the bio filtering. should take about a week or so then a half load of minnows to boost the bacteria level to where i can handle a full pound (apx. 240 minnows). pails, trolling buckets, aerators and dip nets are on the way from Bass Pro Shop.
