He swung that racoon skin hat at them .
He had a razor in it like the Peaky Blinders. MERC

Last Summer my wife and I encountered a black bear while hiking with our dogs in a remote area here in Michigan. It literally crossed the trail right in front of us. We called the dogs back to us and got the hell out of there. All I had was a snub nosed .38. Really glad I didn't have to use it.
Everybody says black bears are "harmless", but when you surprise one in its home turf, they look pretty freaking dangerous. |

Pretty much they don't want to mess with yah but don't give em a chance to. Hell I have had them 10 ft. in front of me at the bottom of my steps pounding their front paws and growling at me.
Wish I had a picture of the huge brownish bear that came on my back porch and was watching me in the damn kitchen. I cracked the door a bit to tell him to beat paws and he stuck his nose in the damn door and tried to push it open. So much for that enjoy yer visit I retreated. A fed bear is a dead bear. I'm trying to get my brother-in-law to get the game cam pics of the grizzly his buddy got in Arizona. He's seen them. He says it is a brownish-blond bear. Game and Fish is secretly re-introducing them into Arizona.
It is a huge public safety hazard, as they aren't informing anyone as to what they are doing. I wonder if they will admit it after the first hikers get mauled and killed?

In 6 years of working as a Park Ranger many years ago I had only one bear encounter incident.
I had bear spray in my left hand and a 44mag S&W in my right. My hastily thought up plan involved using both at the same time. Fortunately for both the bear and me it took off back into the woods with no shots fired or spray used. The only other thing I remember thinking at the time was that I really needed a shotgun loaded with buckshot |

Watching Netflix series 'Overland' about guys traveling Alaska in 4 wheel drive trucks. They came across a big young feller with a dead bear in the back of his truck. He opened his tent flaps and the bear came at him. He punched it and knocked it out. Woke up and he shot it dead. He was an MMA fighter. |

I think a slug would be better than buckshot, but I'll take a .44 mag any time.

Don't want to be sitting under a tree, concentrating on a turkey only to have a black bear sneak up on me. Hasn't happened yet, but there's always that one time... |

I don't recall hearing a whole lot about how the .45 Long Colt does against bears. Since my nephew is being sent to Alaska to work at some fairly remote sights, accessible only by helicopter, the most powerful caliber handgun he has is a Vaquero in .45 Colt.
Although, with the money he's been pulling down, and will be making, plus being single and living at home, he should be able to afford about anything he wants. Hell, he got his WuFlu money and took it and donated the whole thing to filling the freezers of some families he knew who didn't have much money to buy food. If I were driving to Alaska, I'd bring along a cheap pump shotgun with slugs, buckshot, and some bird shot. It is a lot easier to bring a shotgun into Kanadia than a handgun. |
