Welcome to the site where the owners and members have had it with playing "nice" and being "inclusive" and "tolerant" of points of view that are destroying the fabric of what made this country great. The members here are sick and tired of politicians of all parties lying, deceiving, stealing, and pretending they are doing it all for the good of the country while selling out to special interests who have the set goal of destroying this country. We have had enough of career politicians who use their office only for personal gain, and who refuse to listen to the people who put them in office. The membership is no longer part of the silent majority who play nice and get along while getting screwed by anyone with a loud voice and an agenda. Default Alternate calibers for the M1 Garand

I'm following a conversation about obtaining new barrels for the Garand in alternative calibers. Guy says if he can get at least 10 people in on a caliber he has a maker who will run them off. He has rim diameter and OAL restrictions. And lots of different cartridges have been talked about.
I think .308 is a good alternative for a Garand, but I don't have as much experience as some of you guys. What cartridge do you think would be worth pursuing?

P.S. Just checked in, and I guess enough people wanted 6.5 x 55, so, he's doing a run of ten in that size. I know nothing about that cartridge, though.

I think it would be cool to have a Garand chambered in the cartridge it was originally meant for, the .276 Pedersen. I have no idea where you would get ammunition for it, though.

I worked at a Rifle range when I was in high school . I remember the range master that worked there named Berry was shooting his M1 Garand with his reloads, must have been hot loads or something , and He blew up the receiver and cut cuts on his arm and face.

.30-06 is pretty hard to beat, but I wonder what a .25-06 would do in a Garand?

I was actively entertaining the idea of rebarreling an FAL to .243, a while back. I know folks have done it successfully. I'm not one to pioneer new calibers and such. I like to see if it is going to work, first, and let someone else do all the testing.

Wouldn't a 7mm slug in a necked-down .30-06 case push the velocity up high enough to cause wear problems on the bore?

Yeah, one of my buddies has been pushing me to get an M1A. I would just prefer to see what a Garand could be made to do.

7mm Mauser is a dream cartridge in any platform it’s rare and expensive now and probably wears barrels but does such horrible things to what it hits.

Oh, so the 7mm-08 is based off of the .308?

Just saw a vid of some guys shooting a .276 Pedersen. They somehow found about 60 rounds of the stuff, and shot it through a classic rifle. Other than the weird bolt blow back knocking one of the guys hats off it looked really good. Even those shooters wondered about the .276 in a garand.

I agree .308 NATO would be the way to go: widespread availability & cheaper than 30-06. Less recoil as well.

I'll still keep my '43 Springfield Garand in US .30 tho.

Yeah, my first garand was the original -06. Korean War era Springfield.

When CMP ammo was cheap you just took your time shootin to give the shoulder a rest. Had to sell that rifle cause I needed funds. Miss it regularly.
