Vietnamese mechanic
I diagnosed the rear transfer case output shaft bearing to be worn on my kid's 1997 4Runner. I bought the bearing, seal and oil and took it to a Vietnamese mechanic. He said he had replaced that bearing before and "sometimes the bearing gets stuck on the shaft". OK. I left it.
Three days later I came back and he said it was done. I paid $250 and drove it home. It vibrated a lot, just like before. I crawled under and the transfer case and bearing had not been touched. I drove back and pointed that out to the mechanic. He said he replaced the axle bearings in the rear end. I asked him what happened to the bearing and seal I gave him. He said he used them on the rear end, which is impossible. He said leave the car and he would fix it. I said I wanted a refund. He gave me my money but was not able to produce the bearing, seal and oil so I am out $80 and a bunch of time.

Buy a Harbor Freight press and push it off the shaft yourself.

The dealer wants $660 for the repair. I would do it myself except that my recent shoulder surgery prevents it. So I will leave the bearing like it is for a while.

Small claims court? I have been there more than once against slimeballs. I won't abide fraud. Auto mechanics are among the slimiest sleezeballs out there.

I've been in & around the car/truck business since 1980. I have never seen an asian or black mechanic in all that time, or any other minority for that matter except for some Mexicans. I guess it's one of the last bastions of the White Male.
Never once seen a female wrench-turner, either. |
