If you start with a pistol and make it a rifle later, you can go back to being a pistol if you do it in the right order. If it built as a rifle first, you can't make it a pistol later.
It happens a lot with AK style pistols... you can pin and weld on a barrel extension to +16" and then install a stock, and then later remove the stock first and then remove the barrel extension. If you shorten the barrel and then remove the stock, you have the "illegal SBR" problem.
It's easier with an AR.
